Champions League

BCCI asks ECB to delay the start of the test series by a day so that Dhoni and perhaps Badrinath if he selected in the test team will have a chance to play in case CSK qualify. At the time of scheduling, they did not make this request - I wonder why now?

Assuming that remains unchanged and CSK qualify, I have been wondering who will be the captain. Fleming is expected to be the coach instead of Wessels? My guess therefore, is that it would make Hussey the most logical choice, thought whether he would want it especially if it is against his "other" team.

Here is the draw.

Does the four foreign player restriction apply for the champions league?

I don't remember seeing Murali Vijay in the CSK line-up for IPL -- was he in the squad?

This is going to be one odd tournament - Aussies and New Zealanders will fly down after their test series which ends on Dec 2nd and the champions league starts on the 3rd - won't they be jet-lagged?

Two of them (Morkel and Hussey) will play against teams they are currently representing, though they got their home teams $200,000 each for this release.

I for one can never imagine in soccer Real Madrid and ManU qualifying and say Beckham having to choose one!

Do you think the Champions League concept will generate as much interest as the IPL?

To answer your first question the England tour was fixed a long time ago, the Champions Trophy is a recent addition.

The second question about the captaincy requires deep thought. So I let it go unanswered.

Murali Vijay is not in the CSK team. However, I am unsure of the teams composition.

When they announced the champions leaugue, they made a big deal that dhoni will be free to play for India and it won't be a conflict - just a little bit of back tracking?

requires deep thought - so I let it go unanswered - lol

I think it is easy, I went through the list and did not find very many options that I would like:)

To start with, it is wrong on the BCCI to ask them to shift the dates... plenty of back tracking... either way why do they assume that CSk will be in the finals... it is a rubbish tournament and has no purpose for Indian cricket.

Scorpi,

You have put your finger on the crux of the issue.

"either way why do they assume that CSk will be in the finals"

Do you think match fixing is involved?

scorpicity: I wish they had given a year or two to the IPL before launching the CL stuff.

ottayan, I think the one IPL team needs to make it to the final, otherwise I cannot imagine any crowd going to see Warriors versus Titans.

Well Otts... the champions trophy is being played here right.... now who in the stadium will turn up to watch two other league sides other than an Indian one play... I have not seen that happening in the past... who knows, might be possible just for the money.

again all the regular naysayers return.. :) I am sure Champions T20 League would be a great hit among the Indian crowd and they are going to turn up for the matches whoever plays the finals (i.e. they will be in full force even if none of the Indian teams participate)

Also if Chennai makes the finals, it would be a disaster to the paying public (Chennai residents) that Dhoni was not given an opportunity to play the finals... I for one believed that it would have been a wise decision if ECB has agreed to BCCI's request.. [Remember i am chennai super kings fan]

Now back to your questions..

1. four player rule does not apply.

2. Yeah. Hussey would be the natural choice.. But don't be surprised if Badrinath is given the captaincy..

3. Murali Vijay has not been signed up by any IPL club.. But you may see CSK signing him up next season especially with their opener problems..

4. Yeah.. playing for different clubs is a problem.. But in soccer, club football is the primary form of entertainment but for cricket, the primary form is national..

5. As seen from the first para, i am sure Champions T20 League would be a much bigger success than IPL..

robin,

good to see a naysayer - though I still believe it won't be as big a hit as the IPL. I will watch it on TV but so far have not considered going to the stadium.

Did Cheeka and CSK miss out on scouting Murali Vijay?

Lastly Dhoni not playing may be not ideal, but it was planned knowing all of this, so the right decision.
