Doctorate - why?

Continuing the why series, I was quite surprised to hear that Sania Mirza has been granted an honorary doctorate. Why? She is in her 20s and has had a career marred by injury. I do believe she is a good sports person and needs to rewarded with appropriate sports awards, sponsorships etc. But a doctorate ??!

I guess we need better coordination with the sports ministry in times like these - perhaps the officials were not initially aware of the time crunch :)

RS,

She has not even proved to be a good enof sports person...

Maybe she is at the end of her career. A doctorate as a goodbye gesture?

Ridiculous... false injustice. An over dose of making up other sports.

But we ought to ask that question whether she is being fairly treated too.

On a general note, am happy RS you are covering at least most other Indian sports :). I seriously appreciate that.

trideep: Really strange - why choose her among all the other sports people we have?

ottayan: lol :)

scorpicity: I agree she has had a very raw deal with many different things including the fatwas. But a doctorate - bizzare... I wish I could see some of these sports events in action on TV rather than wait for the olympics :) I think that will encourage more people to watch different sports. But cricket is still what draws my attention the most!
